Ask the Doctor
"I blush really easy when I am nervous, and then I stay red for hours.
I noticed that even when I am not stressed my cheeks are redder then they were in the past.
What is going on?"
There are many medical conditions that can cause episodes of flushing. The most common one is rosacea. Dermatologists treat rosacea everyday. It is important to have a consultation to rule out other, less common causes of facial redness, some of which can be more serious medical conditions.

"My son has warts on his hands. He had them treated with laser several time, but they just multiply. Is there anything new in the treatment of warts?"
Yes. New immunomodulating medications are available to boost up the immune response and help the body fight the wart-causing virus more effectively.

"I had the worst acne growing up. It left scars on my face and back. Now my daughter, who is 11, is starting to break out. Should I wait till she is older or is it better to start the treatment early?"
Because of your family history, it is likely, that your daughter’s acne is going to be severe, especially if it is starting at such an early age. Getting her on a right skin care regimen and treatment may prevent bigger problems with her skin in the future.

"My 27- years old sister was just diagnosed with melanoma. No one else in the family ever had it. Should I see a dermatologist even though my moles look the same?"
Absolutely. Parents, siblings, and children of any melanoma patient are at significantly increased risk of developing one. Your skin has to be examined by a dermatologist at least twice a year. And stay out of the sun!

"I know that I am not supposed to tan when doing laser hair removal on my legs. Can I use a self-tanner spray or Mystic tan?"
No. Any product that darkens the color of your skin is going to make a laser treatment less effective, and may predispose to redness, irritation, and even burn. Do not use any self- tanner for at least 2 weeks before laser treatment.

"My family doctor diagnosed me with skin cancer on my nose. He recommended that I have Mohs surgery done. What is the difference between regular skin cancer surgery and Mohs surgery?"
Mohs surgery, AKA micrographic surgery, is the gold standard of treatment of many skin cancers. It allows for a precise examination of a surgical margin under microscope by the surgeon during the operation. This ensures the complete removal of the cancer with the smallest amount of healthy skin removed possible. Mohs surgeons, such as myself, are specially trained to perform this procedure. "My kid was born with a red birthmark on her face. She is now 10, and very ashamed of it. Kids at school are teasing her. What can be done? We are deathly afraid of scarring since it is right in the middle of her face."
Laser removal offers scar less solution to your daughter’s problem. Please come in for a consultation.

"I get ingrown toenails all the time. Do you have any suggestions how I can prevent this problem?"
Cut your nails straight across and rounded slightly in the center. Wear proper fitting shoes and alternate shoes on regular basis. Tight shoes can cause ingrown toenails. Do not try to self-treat ingrown toenails, especially if they are infected. See a dermatologist.

"There are so many sunscreens out there… How do I choose a good one?"
Use the sunscreen with SPF of 15 and higher. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreen ingredients that provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays, including: benzophenones (oxybenzone), cinnamates (octylmethyl, cinnamate and cinoxate), titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and avobenzone (Parsol 1789). My personal favorites are Estion SPF 38 for adults (see special offers) and Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunblock SPF 30 for kids.
